Thanks for all of the comments and well wishes for Piggy. It was really a good thing because now it will force me to license him, which I've always avoided just because I hate the idea of conforming to "the man". I don't think I should have to pay the city for the privilege of owning a dog and I liked the idea of at least my dogs being able to live off the grid. Now that I've used the services of the pound though, I'm so grateful that they exist. It's a pretty great system for anyone who finds or loses a pet.

The other good thing is it got me to dig up his microchip information and actually update it with a current phone number and address. The info was from 5 years ago and again, the system was quick and efficient. I don't know why I put it off for so long!

All in all, I think I'm pretty lucky to have such great dogs. In 5 years they've never gotten lost before and I'm sure that this time was not a run away, escape attempt either. It's more likely that Piggy got interested in a kid or cyclist and simply lost his bearings. We haven't even been here for a month yet, so I think it would be easy for him to get confused and end up at the wrong door. My Jack Russell did that last winter when we visited my parents. She was cold and barking to be let in, but was on the neighbor's porch - 3 houses down!
