Football for People Who Hate Sports

Super Bowl Sunday doesn't mean a whole lot to me.  I don't have satellite which means the much hyped commercials which cost millions & will be the subject of much water cooler talk will be pre-empted by lame ass local ones.  Growing up in Canada has made me a hockey fan, not a football fan.  I don't think my high school even had a football team.

Even so, I'll probably tune it for a bit today.  Peyton Manning personifies All American dreaminess & pairing a testosterone fueled sport like football with the ultra feminine Prince is a combo too bizarre not to watch.  But if you're looking for alternative entertainment today, go see We Are Marshall.

Even if you hate sports, go see this movie.  I absolutely loved it & honestly can't think of a single person I know who wouldn't love it too.  The trailers I've seen really don't do this film justice.

Even though I cried (more than once) & usually hate sad movies, you won't walk out feeling sad.  I tend to match my movie choices to the mood I'm in or *want* to be in.  I don't consider feeling like crap after watching a movie "entertainment" & I often put off watching highly acclaimed flicks if I know they have a sad ending.  I'm sure at some point I'll get around to watching The Notebook, but so far I haven't had a day where I consciously decided I felt like bawling my eyes out.  If I'm already feeling depressed, I want to feel better, not wallow in it!  Tearjerkers can stay on the shelf, thank you very much.

The breakout performance of this movie is this kid - Anthony Mackie:

we are marshall

I didn't recognize him, but after seeing his IMDB page, I realize I have seen lots of his movies.  He did a fantastic job & I'd love to see him get nominated for something.  If I had any pull, I'd whip up a letter writing campaign for him.  (Actually, I have no clue if public opinion has any bearing on Oscars etc.)

My other favorite football movie is Any Given Sunday.  The Oliver Stone patented cinematography makes football exciting even for us non-fans.  I would watch football if it could be shot like that (though apparently I'm the only one since the XFL didn't last very long).  I have this movie on DVD & watch it whenever I need a boost to get me motivated.  It always makes me want to go to the gym & work up a sweat.  Not nearly as fulfilling as playing on a team or pushing myself to win, but it will have to do!  I'm a little small for football.  =)

Last football tidbit - I really really really want to put on a helmet & do that headbutt thing where they bang their grille? guard? cage? against each other.  I've never played any sport where I trusted my equipment enough to smash myself against another player & I'm so curious about what that feels like.  I'd really like to run as fast as I can & tackle someone too.  I've never done anything where I could push myself to my absolute max like that (without getting red carded anyway!).

Hmmmm...maybe I *am* a football fan!  lol

Happy Sunday!
